Had a wonderful day with an incredible family exploring a cheese farm near Volterra and the town itself. We laughed so much that my cheeks are still sore! :) We learned all about traditional foods in Tuscany, cheese amking, and rural life in the countryside. Our visit to the alabaster shop was quite special. It's not everyday that you get to see a master at work.
The family specifically asked to move away from the crowds and experience the real Tuscany, so I knew they'd love Volterra. Many visitors aren't aware of this, but Volterra is every bit as charming as San Gimignano, but with fewer crowds. It's a fascinating town, especially for history lovers (Volterra was an Etruscan city and hosts one of the best Eturscan museums in Tuscany). The views in this part of the region are truly spectacular, and the food? Let's just say that none of us were complaining about the endless antipasti, or the wine, or hand-made pici pasta served inside a pecorino wheel...
