I'm a big fan of botanical gardens, which is why I've included the Heller botanical garden, on the shores of Lake Garda, in my recent guidebook: Venice & Veneto for the Shameless Hedonist 2024 (in case you are wondering what the garden has to do with Venice: the guidebook covers lake garda, too!).
The Heller Botanical Garden in Gardone Riviera (Lake Garda)
Visiting the Heller Botanical Garden in Lake Garda offers a unique blend of natural beauty and artistic expression, making it a recommended destination for anyone traveling to the region. The garden is located in the scenic little town of Gardone Riviera, on the western shores of Lake Garda, spans over 10,000 square meters and boasts a stunning array of botanical species from around the globe. In fact, the garden is home to around 3000 different plant species, from exotic tropical plants to native Alpine species, all of which have been carefully curated to create a harmonious and diverse ecosystem.
Bringing Art and Nature Together
One of the standout features of the Heller Botanical Garden is its integration of contemporary art installations. As you explore, you'll be delighted by the works of renowned artists such as Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Auguste Rodin, and Fernand Leger, whose sculptures and installations add a layer of creative intrigue to the natural surroundings.
While smaller than similar gardens in the region (for example: Sigurta park), it really is a charming venue, and a highly recommended stop to make during your Lake Garda tour.
