After a long and grey winter, spring is finally here! Everything is in bloom, and the Tuscan countryside is positively buzzing with life :)
I love the spring and I love botanical gardens, so it's no surprise that one of my favorite places to visit during this season is the Camellia Park near Lucca. The "Camellietum Compitese" is a delightful botanical garden that is dedicated exclusively to camellias. More than 1000 camellias from all over the world fill the paths of this charming park. It's impossible not feel instantly calm and yet somehow energized in this serene venue, that was inagurated in 2002 and has since conquered a spot in everyone's heart.
The Garden is situated just outside the tranquil villages of San Andrea and Pieve di Compito, about 15 minutes from Lucca. The garden is small, so there's no rush. Simply take the time to stroll through the park's paths, and relax. The little stream that runs through the garden adds to the serene ambiance. Then, if you feel like it, hike up to the panormaic viewpoint (called "Belvedere"). It's a bit of a steep walk up the mountain, but the view justifies the effort, in my opinion.
After your visit to the park itself, you can stroll through the narrow alleyways of Sant'Andrea in Compito. This small village seems to have remained untouched for 500 years...
The park is open in season only. See you in Tuscany!
